LASG, NSSF PROUDLY CONCLUDES NATIONAL SCHOOL BOARD GAMES WITH OVER 300 PARTICIPANTS

The Lagos State Government, in collaboration with the Nigeria School Sport Federation (NSSF), has successfully concluded the maiden edition of the National School Board Games. The two-day chess tournament, held at the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (LASUBEB) Multi-Purpose Hall, ended on Tuesday, 11th February , 2025.

The competition featured U-9, U-12, U-15, and U-18 categories, with over 300 pupils and students representing various states across the country.

Speaking at the closing ceremony, the Honorable Commissioner for Ministry Basic and Secondary Education Lagos State , Mr. Jamiu Ali-Balogun, applauded all participants for their outstanding performances and commended the organizers for providing a platform that promotes mental development and healthy competition. He reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to integrating sports into education as a tool for cognitive and character development.

"Chess is a game of strategy and intellect, and it aligns perfectly with our vision of raising well-rounded individuals capable of critical thinking and leadership in the future,” he stated.

The Executive Chairman of LASUBEB, Dr. Hakeem Shittu, expressed profound gratitude to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for his unwavering support in transforming the basic education sector in Lagos State. He highlighted the governor’s commitment to innovative learning initiatives, including extracurricular activities that has enhance pupils' intellectual capacity.

"Everyone is a winner here today. We encourage participants who did not win a trophy or medal to see this tournament not just as a competition but as an opportunity to sharpen their cognitive skills and build friendships with peers from different states," Dr. Shittu remarked.

The President of the NSSF, Mrs. Olabisi Joseph, expressed her enthusiasm about the collaboration with LASUBEB, emphasizing the importance of such initiatives in nurturing young talents.She further noted that the tournament marks the beginning of a broader vision, with plans to introduce more board games such as Scrabble and Monopoly in future editions.

Winners from this event will represent Nigeria at the International School Sports Federation (ISF) and African School Sports Games in Serbia and Morocco later this year,” she added.

Trophies, medals, and certificates were awarded to the top winners in each category:U-9:Female: Dafiewharen Divine (Lagos State), Male: Dominic Duduefa (Bayelsa State), U-12: Female: Patrick Florence (Lagos State), Male: Joseph Bamidele; U-15: Female: Ebiakpo Treasure (Bayelsa, State) Male: Goodness (Bayelsa State); U-18:Female: Ebiakpo Ebidise Sunshine (Bayelsa State)Male: Nruima Tersse Ferdinand (Lagos State).

To enhance teaching quality and equip educators with globally competitive skills, the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (LASUBEB), in collaboration with the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), has launched the Y2023/2024 UBEC Teachers’ Professional Development Programme. Funded by UBEC, the training has commenced across 36 designated centers in Lagos State. It is designed to strengthen teachers' pedagogical skills and improve classroom delivery. The capacity building includes school-based training modules such as Strengthening Mathematics and Science Education (SMASE), Special Teacher Enhancement Programme (STEP), and Early Grade Reading, among others. Speaking at the launch, the Chairman of LASUBEB, Dr. Hakeem Shittu, emphasized the importance of continuous professional development for teachers, stating that quality education begins with well-trained educators. He reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to investing in capacity-building initiatives to enhance learning outcomes in public schools. Dr. Shittu further noted that the Lagos State Government, under the leadership of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, remains dedicated to raising the standard of basic education through strategic partnerships and investments in teacher training. He expressed confidence that the professional development programme will empower educators with modern teaching techniques;thereby ensuring they can effectively engage pupils and improve academic performance across the state. Permanent Board Member LASUBEB , Dr. Saheed Ibikunle, highlighted that the initiative aims to provide teachers with the necessary support, skills and resources to effectively deliver quality education. Speaking on the impact of the programme, the State Coordinator of UBEC, Mr. Joshua Arema, noted that the Teachers’ Professional Development Programme will run in phases; ensuring that educators across Lagos State benefit from continuous training and support. He reiterated that the initiative aligns with UBEC’s mission to enhance the quality of basic education through teachers' upskilling and ultimately contributing to the overall transformation of the education sector. Comrade Hassan Akintoye, Chairman Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) at the gathering expressed his gratitude for the initiative, noting that the new teaching strategies and methodologies will significantly improve teachers classroom engagement and overall learning outcomes.

As part of efforts to ensure effective school management and continuous monitoring of teaching and learning activities in Lagos State Public Primary Schools, the Executive Chairman of the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (LASUBEB), Dr. Hakeem Babatunde Shittu with the Board Secretary, Mr. Hakeem Lamidi led an inspection visit to Langbasa Nursery and Primary School in the Eti-Osa Local Government Education Authority (LGEA) today. During the visit, Dr. Shittu assessed the school’s infrastructure, interacted with staff and pupils, and evaluated the overall learning environment.
